Description
ALASKA (CB-1) as the ship appeared during its wartime cruise in the Pacific in 1945. The ship sports Measure 22 camouflage, with an embarked Curtiss SC Seahawk of VCS-16 (Cruiser Scouting Squadron SIXTEEN).
Both CB-1 and CB-2 joined the fleet in the western Pacific by mid-1945. Before heading to the combat zone, CB-1 underwent a very minor refit - mostly correcting issues discovered during the shakedown, but most interestingly adding the basic SPR-1 electronic countermeasures system. A pair of DBM radomes have been added on yards just below the SK radar platform, and AS-57 ECM antennas have been added to the yardarms, along with a pair of TBS antennas. The TDYa S-band jamming system has also been added, with two receiving antennas in radomes mounted abeam the amidships catapults and the jamming antenna in a radome just aft of the foremast. A corner-reflector antenna for the TDY jamming system has been added ahead of the air defense platform.
CB-1 finished the war in this fit, helping to bring returning servicemen home through Operation MAGIC CARPET, before deactivating in late 1946.
